Flip module only?

New postby charlesnader on Thu Oct 11, 2007 8:39 pm

Hi Dennis,

Nice pics. Would you know what will the price be for the flip module only and when will it be available?

I notice you posted on HV20 site, and it said something to the effect of "The Brevis35 packaged for use with the flip module will be under $1300". What about without the Brevis35?

Thanks...looking forward to see more pics or some fine footage from this

Congrats...

We're in full producition on both the flip modules as well as the compensated optics to go with it. 10 units will be shipped to selected users (already selected based on hardware) in the next 2 weeks, and we should have flip units streaming out 3 weeks or so after that. The Brevis package where the base unit will always be used in the flip mode will be ~$1300, and if the unit is to be used in both modes (flipped or non - flipped) $1500.

A new quick release will be an option for use with the bare or flipped unit.

As most of you know, we decided to send the entire first production run of FF units back to the manufacturer for internal gear upgrades as I wasn't 100% satisfied with the movement. I'll have updates shortly, but we're not expected a lengthy delay.

Are there any testshots yet?

When I see the height, I fear that my Zacuto Baseplate will not be high enough - any tests and solutions on that yet?

Rafael, the flip module itself can be rotated 180 degrees to drop the camera below the optical axis instead of above. We're shooting with a group of local cinematographers this weekend using an HVX non-flipped and the little HV20, flipped. Shooting with the bare flip unit (no adapter attached) produces footage that is flipped, but otherwise not distinguishable from bare cam footage. In other words, the image is incredibly clean and perfectly aligned.

Dennis, what is the exact offset (above/below) in the optical path of the flip unit?

So if I already have the Brevis HD bundle, what is the price I am going to pay for the flip unit alone Dennis?

It looks great btw!

Jon, it's 44mm. William, ~$400. We're pretty confident on pricing.

Will there be an "out-of-one-block" Brevis? ;-)

400 $ for the flip unit... I am not sure this is a good price. One of the reasons I bought the BREVIS35 is the little light loss compared to other adapters.
The Flip unit just will take off the problem with the image flip, but it surely will cost more light loss.

So if we compare the money wich will go for renting lights to the opportunity of watching non flipped image... I am just wondering does it worth? I mean - we will actually give 400 $ and this will cost us more expenses on the shooting stage. Well 400 $ are not so much money(in Bulgaria there are), and some productions have enought money to rent what they want and what is necessity to use. But... the most of the users prefer to use less light (I believe the light loss of the Filp Unit will be small, but there is a light loss).

I understand how much money, work and time are putted into making the Flip Unit and I think it will be a great thing to have it(not just for the Brevis owners), but I think the price... ~400 $ is not very good. Of course I should see the users opinion when they have it and hopefully use it before saying "It's not good" . But the true is I am really surprised with that price, I expected something around ~ 200 - 250 $ .

As I am a Brevis HD Bundle Owner I will eventually buy it - but I won't be happy giving 400 $ for it (I was very happy buying the BREVIS35)

Custom-made glass is expensive... there's no cheap way around it other than mass production. And there just isn't enough demand for mass production.

If you don't think the price is right... you don't need to get one. THAT is what's great about the modular approach.

I hope you are not offended or something, I just share an opinion.

As I said, I know the making of Flip Unit is not an easy job. It cost Cinevate time, money, hard work. Your products, ideas - You are giving us great opportunities!

I really respect that!

So after an extensive posting on how the flip unit will effect light loss, you quibble about the price? Because those other problems you list will go away if you save $150?
