Vampire FX test

New postby fsavideo on Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:00 pm

These are test FX clips for my new Horror/Drama film, "Ten Questions" I shot the test footage with a JVC 110 and Brevis system. Shot in Uncompressed 10 bit HD going into my axio system. The film will have a lot of effects so I'll be in pre production for a few more months. These are early stages of the FX and have been improved. The test included Choroma key/ Make up/ digital effects and digital FX makeup.
It will star Christina Wood who was in two of my other films, "Black Forest" and "Mirror Image"
This film, "Ten Questions" was written and will also be directed by me, Andrew Henriques

in your opinion, how does the HDV footage hold up under the stress of fx work and rendering? I haven't tested footage from my hd100 under that much stress but was gonna switch to a more robust codec because of the paper thin HDV codec from jvc hd100. Low light is not the best with hd100 also. What brevis diffuser did you use? Your footage looks good to me.

It's all in the way you set up for editing. I shot this in HDV but imported the clips in my AXIO system in Uncompressed 10 Bit HD. I did all of the FX's in Adobe After effects CS4 then used used Adobe Dynamic Link to import the FX's into Premiere CS4, (I didn't export or render the FX footage from After Effects), so it maintains clean edges even with all of the FX's. (The resolution really helps when working with Chroma Key.) All the final rendering is done in Premiere CS4 with the uncompressed 10 bit codec.
I used the stock Brevis diffuser that came with the system. The background is a Chorma keyed still photograph that I added a fast blur fethered mask in After Effects to get the DOP. I shot it with 5k Florest lights using Nikon Prime Lens (50/24/85mm)
I'm still in pre production on my new film, "Ten Questions" and still working on more FX's. If you want to see the clips as I'm working on them go to my Left Of Center Films fan page on facebook and bebome a fan.
Hope this helps.

Nice... you have one of those direct capture cards!! How much do they go for or start at? I'm a final cut user, but also have access to CS4. By what factor more disc space is needed for uncompressed vs HDV from hd100? Good luck with the finished product. Artists like you inspire me!

Wow, I don't think I've ever inspired anyone before. Thanks :)
The card runs about $5,ooo (worth every penny) and I really didn't keep track of disc space for the HD footage. The clips I used for the test were only about 1 to 2 minutes for each clip, but you will proally need a lot of space to do it the way I'm doing it.
If your going to use After effects for FX's you might want to consider using Premiere to cut the project. They really work very well together.
I'm going to post when the project is complete and I start sending it out to film festivals on my facebook Left Of Center Films fan page.
Keep doing your thing and never stop growing as a film maker.
